Tsai Ning was born in Taichung. She has an architectural background. By using spatial installations design and immersive interactive audiovisual environment, her works focus on interactive behavior design, marginal subjectivity, visual culture, presence awareness..
Breathing is usually unconscious and autonomous physiological behavior, but sometimes it can be temporarily and consciously controlled. When feelings are chronically oppressed, individuals may be dominated by subjective anxiety that causes a strong emotional reaction, reflecting the dynamic of breathing rate. As the basic mechanism of biological survival, breathing needs to be done at a certain speed and depth for one to feel comfortable. There is no way to survive without breathing, but excessive breathing makes people suffer, like those social misfits who cannot find themselves a suitable place. Vision establishes spatial sensations before other senses. This work reconstructs the breathing patterns induced by psychological status into immersive image experience, and project the inner emotions to the environment. By sensing the interplay of the effects of surrounding images and internal actions, one can gradually control external images' changing patterns. This interactive mechanism intends to let the participants control the external images through breathing and perceive the illusion of hypoxia caused by excessive carbon dioxide emission and the following mental and physical modification.
