Structures of Being

"Structures of Being" is an exploration and articulation of the myriad inspirations found within Antonio Gaudí's practice and Casa Batlló. Taking the form of a facade mapping, projections took place throughout 2024. The intention was to create an immersive experience that invites viewers to contemplate the profound beauty of natural forms and their ongoing influence on human creativity.

Drawing parallels between technological innovation and Gaudí's revolutionary architectural approach, new tools and technologies were used to respond to the natural forms, sources of inspiration, patterns and aesthetics in Casa Batlló's nature-inspired facade and internal structure (including a collaboration with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center). Utilizing a detailed 3D scan of the facade, the features and topology were brought to life, allowing both visible and hidden facets of the architecture to emerge. Sources of natural inspirations and phenomena important to Gaudí further influenced the visual evolution.

The visual piece was accompanied by an original score composed by Robert M. Thomas, featuring algorithmic compositions interpreted by local performers, including organist Juan de la Rubia and the Cosmos string quartet, recorded at the Palau de la Música Catalana.

索菲亞・克雷斯波 (Sofia Crespo)

Sofia Crespo is an Argentine artist based in Lisbon who pioneers the integration of artificial intelligence in digital art. Working with Norwegian artist Feileacan Kirkbride McCormick as the duo Entangled Others, she explores the intersection of technology and biology, challenging distinctions between artificial and organic.

Her artistic inquiry explores the potential of neural networks to simulate and evolve organic forms, positioning machine learning as an extension of human creativity rather than a technological anomaly. Crespo's projects, including Neural Zoo (2018–2020) and Artificial Natural History (2020–2023), investigate speculative ecosystems and synthetic life forms, offering a reimagined landscape where nature and computation converge. These works invite audiences to reconsider the boundaries between artificial and natural.

Her work has been exhibited globally at prestigious venues including Kunstverein Hannover, Fotomuseum Winterthur, the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A), and Times Square. In 2022, Entangled Others' piece 'Swim' was acquired by Buffalo AKG Art Museum. In 2024, Crespo created 'Structures of Being' for Casa Batlló in Barcelona, a facade mapping inspired by Gaudí's organic architecture.
Beyond her artistic practice, Crespo has lectured at institutions like MIT and the Oxford Artificial Intelligence Society.
